Chandeliers and Champagne and the Ever Popular 3 Buck Chuck

By Angela Baden

It is interesting that, no matter who they may be, and whatever is going on, people worldwide love a bargain.  Even those in the champagne and chandelier crowd are no exception. The idea of getting something at a less expensive price seems to appeal to most people.

That is definitely the case (no pun intended) right now. In the Champagne industry right now there are no discount bargains going on.

In France, the champagne industry has been greatly affected by the economic situation worldwide; so sales of the bubbly from Champagne world wide have dropped. For the same reason, champagne sales in the US have dropped off a great deal. Although I enjoy champagne from time to time, I enjoy other nice sparking wines: a good Riesling or a nice Prosecco, for example, on a more regular basis.

One of my favorite haunts is Trader Joe’s Grocery stores, of which we have several in the Washington, DC metro area, including DC, Bethesda, Annapolis, Falls Church Bailey’s Crossroads and Silver Spring.  I have frequent them often depending on where I happen to be on that day or what it is I want.

I notice something interesting every time I go into any Trader Joe’s in the area that sells wines.  People who have some of the most fabulous incomes and homes, highlighted with one or more crystal chandeliers, also frequent TJs. These folks will have Champagne in their carts, as well as other fine wines, beer and other goodies. And, invariably, you will see that they also have a bottle or two of Charles Shaw, the $2.99 TJ brand wine in their cart or loading a case in the family BMW M3 or Bentley Brooklands.

With all of this, TJ’s has a difficult time keeping their 3 buck chuck on the shelf.
